Looking Back at 2011

I’m sitting in my dark chocolate leather chair, French music playing over the speakers, and a green tea in a white ceramic mug while I think about this past year. I am astounded at the items I’ve crossed off my list, the goals I’ve achieved, and some of the hardships I’ve endured. It has definitely been a year of learning, exploring, and stretching who I am as a person and business woman.

Last year I was ice skating high up on a mountain thinking about the year ahead and the adventure that was laid out before us. I was dreaming of touring around Europe with black luggage catching trains and planes to exotic places. I envisioned us curling into each other on a couch surrounded by candles and wine from Italy and fresh cheese from France in our Dutch home. I was dreaming of taking my camera and photographing women in France, in London, in Amsterdam. I was dreaming and not really expecting any of it to happen.

Some people have asked what I’m really proud of this year in my business and I have to say that 2011 proved to me that dreams do come true, when I work for them. I’m proud of the hard work and the late nights I stayed up for to accomplish the goals I envisioned. There were a lot of tears and many times I felt like all the doors were closed and the world was against me, but looking back it has been worth every single bead of sweat. This year has taught me that I can’t sit and wait for things to come to me but I have to make them happen. I’m also really proud of the time I set aside for defining and working on my business to define it even further than just being a boudoir photographer. I’ve realized who my client is, what she likes, and what she is looking for. I also know I love photographing women and they love getting their boudoir images done, but there are some out there who want the same experience but more of a beauty fashion look than sexy.

I was also asked, if I could change anything in my business would I? And yes, there are a few. I’m not very good with answering email. I read every single one, but responding faster is one thing I’ve realized I need to get better at. Also for finding a system that is simple and straight forward so that when my assistant needs to come in and do work, one day, everything will be easy to understand and they can easily step in. I also wish I wasn’t so afraid, gosh most of my tears and frustrations were from me telling myself I wasn’t the right person for the job, how wrong I was!

So what am I looking forward to in 2012? There are some things that I want concentrate on and fine tune in this next year, like getting on top of my crazy Inbox and treating my clients like royalty. Expanding my portfolio and creating more art and editorial looking images. I want to continue travelling and exploring. I want to photograph women all over Europe in luxury hotel rooms and beautifully designed homes. I also want a studio space to share with other creative women where we can collaborate and share ideas, encourage and support each other, and sip champagne at the end of the week before we head to our next adventure. These dreams might not come to fruition in 2012, but I’m going to work to lay a strong foundation so that they eventually do. This year will be about creating stronger relationships, better systems and work-flows, and living out my dream life to it’s fullest.

What has 2011 looked like for you, are you proud of everything you’ve accomplished and realize the hardships were there to make you realize what you truly want? How about 2012 what are you looking forward to?

Christmas 2011

It’s amazing how many things have changed in this past year! Last year I was wrapping presents up with diligent care excited for the receiver to discover their gift and this year I’m exploring two beautiful cities in Austria instead of gathering around a tree.

Christmas is my favourite season and I’m so happy to be enjoying it somewhere new and on a new adventure, but there is a part of me that misses home, running to my stocking first thing Christmas morning and helping my mum with Christmas morning breakfast while my dad prepares us coffee.

However, as much as I miss home, Mister and I are creating new memories and new traditions that we’ll cherish for years to come. So we’re off to enjoy this beautiful Christmas eve in Salzburg, sing Christmas carols in a gorgeous baroque cathedral, and wish everyone we pass a Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas from Austria!!

make the days amazing

There are days, whether you own a business, run around around in high heels getting a different sized dress for the 100th person, sit at a desk for someone else, or fold that tiny little shirt for what feels like the 10th time, when you just want to throw your hands up in the air and say ‘Forget it, I don’t care any more’. That the appeal of your bed, a rock, a drink even is more appealing than the task in front of you, cause you honestly don’t want to move forward, not even an inch.

But on those days, when the weight of the world is so heavy and you’re on the brink of tears, is when you need to move harder and faster then ever before. Because if you are truly passionate in your life it won’t be all rainbows and butterflies, you will be tested and asked how much do you want this?

I am asked this more times than I can count and there are days when I am truly inches away from throwing my hands in the air and walking away. But then I realize that my heart will be broken into so many pieces that I’d never find my again, because this life I’m creating is the one I was destined to live!

So in light of those dark dreary days, let’s work harder and faster to make those days amazing! We have a life to live and a passion burning in our hearts!

Make your dreams come true!

Earlier this month when Mister and I were in Barcelona, we spent a lot of time walking the narrow streets and enjoying tapas while talking about life, our dreams, and where we want to go. It was an emotional couple of days of being completely honest with each other and ourselves about where this life was leading us. Since then we’ve been spending our evenings diving in even deeper with each other and it’s been such an eye opener about how in tune we are with each other and the dream-life we want to live. During one of our conversations I was amazed at how we’re already living out a piece of our dream-life and how we have made our dreams come true!

A couple of months ago I mentioned starting your own personal inspiration board and how having inspirational images tucked away somewhere or out in the open lets you know where you want to go in life. Most of my images are tucked away in a binder that sits next to me on my desk; always available for me to put more images and objects into. However, lately I’ve been using Pinterest as I spend most of my time online and instead of wasting paper to print the image, I just pin it!

Having my inspirational board available (as well as a notebook worth of notes) keeps me on track and shows me how I’m growing and narrowing my goals and dreams! I was once that girl who just drifted through life, but now I’m determined to make something out of it instead of letting it go by.

Are you a girl that just goes through life or are you making dreams and goals and seeing them come true? Do you keep an inspirational board? If you’d like to start one on Pinterest, send me an email and I’ll send you an invite, it’s so much fun to use!

But as great as it is to have an inspirational board and a notebook full of notes, it’s more important to go after your dream life! There is no point in having these images sitting around and a list of things you’d like to do in your life if you never actually act on it. So let’s put some of these things into action shall we?

In the comments below, if you’re brave enough or would like accountability, tell me one thing you’re going to do this week to make one of your dreams come true. Now, the first response might be a no or be negative. Don’t stop there, keep knocking and pushing forward!

What I did: I sent an email, totally put myself out there, offering to speak at an event next year! Crazy hey? Yea I know!

Travel Adventure | Barcelona

I just returned from 3 fabulous days in Barcelona with my love. The gorgeous sun and rain, delicious tapas, and moments spent together made our trip one to remember. Mister and I talked a lot about us and some very honest and shoot it straight conversations about where we’re headed. It was much needed.

Then yesterday I sat with wordpress open and a blank screen. Words that were floating around my head just wouldn’t come forward to write anything of importance, I felt like everything just wasn’t right. I try and write quality content every single time I press the publish button, but the past few days everything just seems scattered.

So while I’m running around preparing for this Friday’s Boudoir Party Experience in The Hague (today is the last day to sign up!), packaging albums and discs of images, and making sure I’m getting my required amount of water/sleep/food for my body I’m leaving you with a few images from Barcelona!

I too treasure Barcelona…my first trip there was with my husband in 2001, the Valentine’s Day week a year after my son was born…we too needed “us” time. February in Barcelona turned out to be the perfect cure…strolling through Las Rambles, the Gothis Quarter and the seaside village of Sitges with both rain and shine, allowed for some magical moments. Your pictures and words struck a chord. Gracias.ReplyCancel
